The library has various collections of record, reconstruction plans, etc. of the municipalities. It also includes some materials and panel data for exhibition.
Some people are afraid that the memories of the Great East Japan Earthquake might have already faded away. We hope that this website will help you pass on the memories of the earthquake to the next generation.
This operation was arranged in order Tohoku Expressway and Route 4 enable to reach to the major coastal roads such as Route 6 and Route 45, where serious damages were estimated.
The channel clearance and the restoration of some anchorage area enabled receiving relief supplies at ten major ports by March 23.
The members of TEC-FORCE gathered from all the Regional Bureaus in Japan. Total 255 staffs in 63 groups were mobilized at its peak (total 14,109 man-days as of May 17, 2011).
In order to support various activities toward restoration, total 192 disaster response vehicles so far have been dispatched to 27 municipalities (17 cities, 8 towns, and 2 villages) in 3 prefectures, in cooperation with the Regional Bureaus all over Japan.
The liaisons were sent to 31 municipalities in 4 prefectures. The number of liaisons sent was 96 on March 23 at its peak. Total number of liaisons reached 3,916 by June 30, counted after the occurrence of the disaster.
From March 13 2011 until full-scale communication system being restored, procurement of relief supplies had been undertaken by the Regional Bureau staff on behalf of the affected municipalities based on their needs.
Temporary restoration works of Route 45 were completed on April 10, 2011, a month after the earthquake, and traffic on entire Route 45 and 6 (except for the sections restricted due to the Nuclear Disaster) was secured.
The water depth of Sendai Airport was reduced (gross volume of drainage 5 million m3, which is equivalent to 14,000 swimming pools of 25 m in length)
Emergency restoration works of total 19,970 m coastal levees. In the midst of fear of aftershocks and tsunami, emergency restoration works were undertaken for coastal levees in seven sections of four coasts.
Out of 126 wharves (excess 7.5 m deep) located in total ten ports along the Pacific coast, 106 wharves (84%) became accessible by March 1, 2012.
Usually it would take four years to start actual construction works after a project had been launched; but we did it in less than a year. In November 2011, an entire expressway connecting cites along the Sanriku Coast was designated as a “Reconstruction Road”.
The restoration works of the coastal levees adjacent to important facilities is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2013. The emergency restoration works of the coastal levees, which raised the height of the levees high enough to sustain high tide or high wave, were completed by August 2011.
About 40% of total 3,494 m caissons (concrete boxes) used in the north breakwaters of the Port of Hachinohe were knocked down by the tsunami. Disaster waste (tsunami sediment) was used to promptly restore the damaged breakwaters.
